The Art of Lawn Watering: A Comprehensive Guide by Perrine Property Maintenance

Sprinkling life into your lawn is an art and a science that can transform your yard from drab to lush. One of the key elements of lawn maintenance is watering – a task that may seem simple but is often misunderstood. In this post, we’ll unravel the mystery surrounding the optimal time for watering, frequency, and the amount of water your lawn needs.

The Perfect Time for Watering Your Lawn: Day vs Night

Choosing between day and night watering can be a bit of a puzzle. Here’s the scoop:

Daytime Watering
Ideally, you should water your lawn early in the morning, between 6 and 10 am. This is when temperatures and wind speeds are the lowest, reducing the amount of water loss due to evaporation. Additionally, the morning dew contributes, meaning less water is needed.

Nighttime Watering
Watering in the evening or at night can lead to increased disease production as it creates a prolonged period of wetness beneficial to various pathogens. Therefore, it’s generally not recommended.

Watering Frequency: How Many Days a Week?

A common misconception is that lawns need to be watered daily. On the contrary, watering deeply and less frequently encourages the grass to develop a deep root system, making it more drought-resistant and healthy. How many days to water each week depends largely on how hot your area is and / or if you have applied any fertilizers to your lawn, which is often based on the time of year.

Spring and Fall
When the weather is pretty cool, watering your lawn 1-2 times a week is generally sufficient.

Summer
In the hot and dry months of a Midwest Summer, it’s advisable to water your lawn 1 – 3 times a week.

Remember, it’s always better to adjust based on weather conditions. If it rains, you can skip or reduce watering correspondingly.

How Much Water and How Many Minutes per Area?

As a general rule of thumb, your lawn needs 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week, including rainfall.

Sprinkler Timing
Depending on your sprinkler output, it may take about 15-30 minutes to deliver half an inch of water. So, if you water twice a week, you should aim for half an inch each time, requiring about 30-60 minutes for each area.

Measuring Water Output
Place empty tuna cans in different areas of your lawn and measure the depth of water after 15 minutes. Tuna cans are a little over an inch in height so it will give you a good estimate of how long you need to water to reach the 1/2 inch mark.
